Stop WooCommerce from preselecting a payment method at checkout
This is for WooCommerce stores that sell to shoppers in Finland and the Nordics. Shoppers pick their own payment method, and pay-later options go last. It works on the Checkout Block and the classic checkout.
Delivery by 15 December 2026. Full refund any time before delivery, and for 30 days after it.
The shopper pressed the button without picking a method:
The order is not sent yet.
Three steps, once per store
You set it up once. After that, it runs on every checkout.
Install the plugin
Upload it to WordPress and add the licence key from your email.
Set your order
Turn off preselection and move invoice and pay-later to the end. Then type the order-button text you want.
Shoppers choose
If a shopper skips the payment choice, they see a short prompt in Finnish, Swedish or English. The order waits until they choose.
The law says "don't preselect". The Checkout Block always does.
Finnish stores have had this rule since 1 October 2023. WooCommerce has no setting for it.
The rule
Under section 12b of chapter 6 of the Finnish Consumer Protection Act, no payment method may be preselected. Credit and pay-later methods must not be listed first. See the KKV guidance on kkv.fi.
The Checkout Block
The Checkout Block always selects a payment method for the shopper. A fix shared in the community stopped working somewhere between WooCommerce 10.9.1 and 10.9.4. GitHub issue #65938.
The built-in fix
WooCommerce plans its own fix but has not given a release date. If it ships before delivery, I'll email you and offer a refund.
Until then, your checkout can break the rule, and an update can break your workaround.
Four things, and nothing more
It's a small plugin for the Checkout Block and the classic checkout.
v1 will
- Leave no method selected. Shoppers start with every payment method unselected.
- Put credit last. You can move invoice, credit and pay-later methods to the end of the list.
- Hold the order. The order can't be sent until a method is picked. A clear prompt shows in Finnish, Swedish or English.
- Change the button text. You choose what the order button says.
v1 will not
- Add an EU withdrawal (cancellation) button. For that, use the free plugin from vendidero.
- Change a payment provider's own hosted payment page.
- Check the rest of your store against the law.
This is software, not legal advice. It follows the requirements as the Finnish Competition and Consumer Authority (KKV) describes them in its guidance.
€49 a year for one store
Your licence year starts on the day I deliver, not the day you pay.
Good fit
- Stores selling to Finnish consumers on WooCommerce
- Agencies that run checkouts for Nordic clients
Not a fit

Questions
Does it work with Paytrail?
If you use Paytrail's hosted page and the shopper picks the method there, you may not need this plugin. Email me at georgi@korenda.com before you buy and I'll tell you.
Does it work on the classic checkout too?
Yes. It's built for both the Checkout Block and the classic checkout.
Which payment plugins will you test?
I plan to test with Paytrail, Stripe, Klarna and Svea, plus WooCommerce's built-in bank transfer and cash on delivery. These are test plans, not promises. If yours isn't on the list, email me first.
What if WooCommerce fixes this itself?
If that fix ships before delivery, I'll email you and offer a full refund.
Does it add the EU withdrawal button?
No. The free plugin from vendidero covers that.
Who's behind it
I'm Georgi Dimitrov, an independent developer in Bulgaria. I'm building this plugin because the Checkout Block has no setting for this rule.
